A.H. (Arwen) Pieterse, PhD, associate professor at the department of Biomedical Data Sciences of Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands. Main research focus is on shared decision making, risk communication and values clarification.
Arwen H. Pieterse is associate professor in medical decision making at the Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands since 2016. She studied Cognitive Psychology and graduated (cum laude) in 1998. She obtained her PhD in 2005. She was Research fellow of the Dutch Cancer Society (2008-2011). She obtained several grants to study doctor and patient treatment preferences, communication during decision consultations, values elicitation, and determinants of shared decision making. Most of her research focusses on cancer treatment decision making. Based on her research, she co-developed an e-learning to teach shared decision making skills to medical students and clinicians. She received the 2018 Jozien Bensing award from EACH, granted biennially to early-career researchers.
She is Associate editor of Patient Education and Counseling since 2017. She was the scientific co-chair of the 2018 European meeting of the Society of Medical Decision Making. She chairs the EACH standing committee on research since September 2018, and ad interim since October 2017. She has successfully supervised 2 PhD students. She co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed international papers; her Google Hirsh Index is currently 22.
